Woman: Chastisement and Other Issues

Abstract

This paper after briefly discussing the status of women in the West. Third World countries like Uganda. Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates has raised three most pertinent questions, namely. (i) whether the husband has an inborn shariah right to beat wife to discipline her and resolve marital discord. [ii) whether the position of men is above women, and finally (iii) whether it is mandatory for believing women to cover face. The paper then strongly refuted. the age old views on these issues and made an attempt to dispel many hitherto held traditional observation as being the reflection of cultural legacy of pre-Islamic jahiliyah and the result of male chauvinism.
